In the Shadow of Time
Polaroids of the Asian Landscape
Starting in 2004 I undertook travels in South East Asia, India, Tibet and China with a view to gaining an insight into the life of the people and the conditions they face. In those regions extensive deforestation, overuse of the land and rampant pollution is matter of great concern. Migration of large number of people abandoning their land to embrace the modern life in fast-growing cities is resulting in social uprooting, increased poverty and the risk of losing the essence of their culture. War, genocide and political conflict have put the traditions and values of the people who live in those countries at great risk of disappearing.
“In the Shadow of Time” is homage to the natural environment of these places and the people who live in it. With my images I seek to bear witness to all that has endured and survived those upheavals. The physical beauty and harmony of the places is accentuated by my use of the unique texture and light rendition of Polaroid Time Zero film to create a timeless, painterly effect. With their muted, almost faded hues, these photos of fields, seas, rivers, lakes, mountains, valleys, villages or city panoramas seem to stem from a different age that is long past. Although contemporary, they seem remote and show no sign of their troubled past or today's inescapable modernization. The scenes photographed thus preserve their natural integrity and innocence.
